KW Symphony presents: Star Trek

On June 2, Kitchener's Centre in the Square was host to hundreds of Star Trek fans and general music connoisseurs alike as the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony played some of the most notable selections from the Star Trek TV series and feature films.

Led by guest conductor John Morris Russell, the special concert series, called "Star Trek: The Music," highlighted well-known titles and themes all the way from Star Trek (1966) to Star Trek: Voyager (1995).

It was worth the wait.

Five years ago John and Marcia Shortreed purchased their 1,500 square foot condo in the Bauer Lofts then waited, and waited, and waited.

Finally, in October 2009 their spacious new home overlooking Waterloo and beyond was ready for occupancy and the couple couldn't be happier.

Marcia said "it's all about the view," noting the 45-foot balcony spanning the length of the loft on the 13th floor overlooks so many trees the couple's grandson said it looks like broccoli.

The music of Trekkies

Yusuf Kidwai

On June 2, over 100 anxious Star Trek fans piled into Kitchener's Centre in the Square for an exciting musical performance, as the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony wooed the crowed with the familiar tunes of Star Trek from "Star Trek: The Music".

The show was hosted by veteran Star Trek actors John de Lancie and Robert Picardo. Picardo began the performance by delivering the famous introductory monologue from the Star Trek TV program. De Lancie and Picardo's witty…

n her dreams, Gwen Woodworth travels through space, the final frontier. She explores strange new worlds, seeks out new life and new civilizations, and boldly goes where no man has gone before.

"I dream, particularly, about Captain Picard and Captain Kirk," Woodworth unabashedly admitted last Thursday, standing first in line amidst hundreds of other Trekkies (or Trekkers, depending on whose lingo you prefer) for an autograph session at Carry-On Comics in Waterloo.

"In my dreams, I know Bill…

"We are going to do one of the most primitive and pagan versions you've ever heard!"
That was the promise made by Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony's music director, Edwin Outwater about the 2009 / 2010 Signature Series finale performance of Carmina Burana.  That was the promise delivered to breathless "spectators" on Friday and Saturday nights at the Centre In The Square; home of the K/W symphony.
Carmina Burana, written by Carl Orff, is music at its most elemental level; as such, a true crossover…

One thing I am learning is how important it is to make time for myself, in spite of the hectic pace of my life.  There is a way to balance work and play, and since taking one FULL day for work and one FULL day for play isn't always feasible when you're self-employed and working around the schedules of others, I am finding ways to tuck fun little surprises throughout the week to make life more enjoyable.

Here's an example - coffee breaks.  Remember those?  I used to try and cram 15 minutes of…

Actor Robert Picardo knew that being part of the Star Trek television franchise would be a long-term commitment.

There would be conventions and shipboard cruises with fans. But he might not have guessed his role as the doctor on Star Trek Voyager would lead him to the stage of Centre in the Square performing with the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony.

On June 2 and 3, the symphony will present Star Trek: The Music, hosted by Picardo and John de Lancie, formerly the omnipotent character Q.

In a phone…
