Thanks to Judi Hopper!

"We are going to do one of the most primitive and pagan versions you've ever heard!"
That was the promise made by Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony's music director, Edwin Outwater about the 2009 / 2010 Signature Series finale performance of Carmina Burana.  That was the promise delivered to breathless "spectators" on Friday and Saturday nights at the Centre In The Square; home of the K/W symphony.
Carmina Burana, written by Carl Orff, is music at its most elemental level; as such, a true crossover…

One thing I am learning is how important it is to make time for myself, in spite of the hectic pace of my life.  There is a way to balance work and play, and since taking one FULL day for work and one FULL day for play isn't always feasible when you're self-employed and working around the schedules of others, I am finding ways to tuck fun little surprises throughout the week to make life more enjoyable.

Here's an example - coffee breaks.  Remember those?  I used to try and cram 15 minutes of…

Actor Robert Picardo knew that being part of the Star Trek television franchise would be a long-term commitment.

There would be conventions and shipboard cruises with fans. But he might not have guessed his role as the doctor on Star Trek Voyager would lead him to the stage of Centre in the Square performing with the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony.

On June 2 and 3, the symphony will present Star Trek: The Music, hosted by Picardo and John de Lancie, formerly the omnipotent character Q.

In a phone…

Star Trek: the Music.

I went with friends to see the KW Symphony perform a selection of tunes from the movies & various serious of Star Trek. I should put it out there: i own a boxed set of CDs from the original Star Trek series. I love the music that Alexander Courage put together for that show, probably for nostalgic reasons, but also because it's so damned good & innovative. I am a pretty big Star Trek fan & have been since childhood, so i know most of the music (though not all,…

Saturday I had a great night out at the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony as they wrapped up their 2009/2010 season.

The evening started with Tabuh-Tabuhan, a piece written by Canadian Colin McPhee. The fervent percussion section really shone, and the sound of the xylophone floated above the sound carrying the music forward against the lethargic and heavy sound of the rest of the orchestra. My exposure to gamelan music previous to experiencing this piece honestly tarnished enjoyment for this piece. I…

The name's Symphony...that's K-W Symphony!

This past Saturday, my husband and I experienced a lovely evening at the Centre in the Square where the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony magnificently performed The Music of James Bond and other Spies and Rogues.  This was their final Pops program of the 2009/10 season, and it was fabulous.

The whole evening was a treat, and without a doubt, a nice change of pace from our very hectic lives.  We are both self-employed, Roger in the Custom Woodworking…

After thinking about it for so long I finally attended a performance of the K/W Symphony - not a classical performance but a Pop performance - an evening of "Bond" music.  I expected entertainment but nothing like the dynamic, personable and interactive experience that my date and I were treated to last Friday.  Check out the video blog (first link below) of K/W Symphony's Principal Trumpet, Larry Larson, for his personal musings and insights on the program of this most unique musical evening. …

I wasn't sure what to expect of last night's performance by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony of Brahms's Concerto in A Minor for Violin, Violoncello & Orchestra, Op. 102, and his Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 98. I don't know much about Brahms's music beyond his ubiquitous lullaby and a disc of Hungarian waltzes I bought recently as part of Deutsche Grammophon's 111 Years of Excellence collection.

The lullaby, as anyone who has ever been a baby or shared a home with one will know, is like a…

KITCHENER - Brahms fans caught a wonderful double-header Friday night, with two major works by the composer being performed with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony at the Centre in the Square.

It was also a chance to see one of Canada's up-and-coming conductors - Jean-Marie Zeitouni - whose busy schedule has him in demand with major orchestras well beyond his native Quebec.

The appetizer was a wonderful ten minute piece entitled Kaleidoscope (Pierre Mercure). True to its name, this eclectic and…
